Hunterdon County, NJ kitchen remodels can range from $5,000-$10,000 for cosmetic upgrades and $25,000-$35,000 for a full remodel.

With an abundance of information readily available surrounding the projected costs of a kitchen remodel, it can be a challenge to sift through what’s real and what’s a pipe dream. There are so many contracting and home remodeling companies operating with different business practices making it difficult to really narrow down an answer to the question, “How much does a kitchen remodel cost?”

The answer isn’t all that straightforward (although it would be nice if it were). There are a number of factors that play into the overall cost of a kitchen remodel. Most of which depend on regional demographics and material/labor costs. It’s astonishing how much the costs of materials and labor can vary from one state to the next. For the sake of this article, I’ll be focusing on current market trends and costs in central New Jersey.

Material prices in New Jersey have fluctuated drastically over the last two years. Supply and demand have played a major role in that fluctuation. As a reference, an 8 foot piece of 2”x4” lumber cost around $2.50 at most big box hardware stores in late 2019. The price for that same piece of lumber sky rocketed to nearly $7 towards the end of 2021. As a result, contractors have been pressed to raise the prices of their projects in order to keep up with the costs of their materials.

Some of the most well-known contractor lead generating services have worked to position themselves as the experts in estimating home remodel costs. The issue being that the data presented by these companies tends to be nationwide and not region (or state) specific. In other words, the presentation of the information is shown as a wide range of potential costs like “the average sized kitchen remodel can cost between $14,550 and $40,385.” That’s a pretty vast range and can cause sticker shock for some readers. It helps to know what the going rate is for most relevant work in your specific location.

That being said, there are a number of factors involved in the total cost of a kitchen remodel. The most likely to affect the bottom line include (but are not limited to) square footage, material selection and features. Square footage is the most obvious-the larger the space, the more things can fit in that space (tile, countertops, cabinets, appliances, etc.). Material selection plays a huge role. The more expensive the selected tile backsplash is or the higher quality the cabinets are, the more the project will cost. Features include various appliances and considerations like a kitchen island, a breakfast bar and removing walls to add more storage.

Budget friendly kitchen remodels may only include cosmetic upgrades with little to no demolition involved. Aspects like painting the walls, replacing appliances, painting kitchen cabinets, changing cabinet hardware and upgrading the flooring can have a massive impact on the feel of the space as well as the value it adds to the home. You can expect to pay anywhere from $5,000-$10,000 to breathe new life into your existing kitchen without major demo or changing the floor plan. The smaller the scope of the project, the lower the overall cost will be and vice versa.

Full kitchen remodels may include a more in-depth scope of work resulting in a higher price tag. A full remodel can involve municipal permitting, demolition, new cabinets and floors, countertop replacement, an adjusted floor plan, new lighting fixtures and a kitchen island with added storage. This is where multiple trades typically get involved, especially if electric or plumbing lines need to be moved to improve functionality of the space. A full remodel can cost anywhere from $25,000-$35,000 or beyond depending on the selected materials and fixtures.

Although this isn’t an exhaustive list of things that can be done in the scope of a kitchen remodel project, it does outline an approximate range that you can expect to pay in New Jersey for 2023. Just remember, it doesn’t take much to change the look and feel of your kitchen. Budget friendly kitchen remodel options can have a big effect on style and comfort. However, if you’re looking to add some serious value to your home, a brand new kitchen may be the way to go. Be sure to budget accordingly and try to hire a contractor who prioritizes your vision and can help steer you in the right direction.
